Women’s History Month began as a local celebration of Women’s History Week in 1980 and has since grown into a nationwide recognition of the achievements, leadership, and lasting impact of women throughout history and in our communities today. The theme for Women’s History Month 2026 is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” highlighting women whose leadership is helping build stronger communities and shaping the future across sectors and communities.
Each year, schools, departments, and campus partners across the University of Pittsburgh host programs and events that recognize the experiences, accomplishments, and contributions of women locally and globally. Our Women’s History Month celebrations are anchored by the annual HerStory Slam, a signature storytelling event that centers personal narratives exploring the many dimensions of womanhood and lived experience.
